Pine tar, also known as torch oil, pine root tar, or wood tar, is a complex compound that appears as a dark brown to black viscous liquid or semi-solid. It has a distinctive odor. Pine tar has a relative density of 1.03 to 1.07 and a boiling point range of 240 to 400°C. It is slightly soluble in water and soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, glacial acetic acid, fixed oils, volatile oils, and sodium hydroxide solution. It is produced by the destructive distillation of pine wood.
